Two Generations, One Chapter, One Love for Samford
When Lolly Simpson ran home to Chi Omega on bid day, there was no one happier for her than her mom, Amy. Amy Simpson was a Chi Omega during her time as a Bulldog (PC '94). Amy played an active role on campus, both in and outside of her sorority. She served on SGA, Step Sing, Student Recruitment Team, Connections (then called SOS), and even was chosen as Homecoming Queen her senior year.
Despite her busy college career, Amy found Chi O to be the source of many of her favorite memories, such as living in the sorority house for 3 years with her best friends.
She graduated in 1998 with a BSBA in Management and returned to Samford as an admission counselor when she met her husband, Brad, a fellow Samford alumnus. The couple moved to Florida, where Amy pursued a Master's in Higher Ed from Florida State University. Life brought them back to the Magic City in 2017 with their two children, Lolly and Owen, and Amy returned to working at Samford. Though now full-time owners of Smith's Variety, Amy and Brad continue to support Samford in various roles — serving as advisory board members for the Brock School of Business, student mentors, scholarship sponsors, and student home group hosts.
When their daughter, Lolly (PC ‘23), ran home to Chi Omega, Amy couldn’t help but feel a sense of joy and pride. But to her, it wasn't just about sharing the same sisterhood.
“I was so excited for her on Bid Day, and I was just so thankful she found a group of ladies she connected with and was excited to be a part of. I just wanted her to find her people and community who would shape her college experience. It was just a bonus that she went Chi O.”
Watching Lolly run home on Bid Day felt like a full circle moment for the Simpsons.
A moment every parent wants for their child.
A moment steeped in legacy.
And now, the Simpsons get to share another legacy with their children. The family own Smith's Variety in Mountain Brook, a 76 year old gift shop located just 10 minutes from Samford's campus. Smith's is a trusted retailer for Samford, Greek Life, party, decor, gifts, and more.
“Legacies and traditions are gifts of influence from that past to the future. Both are instrumental in building and shaping communities. Bid Day is a fun tradition celebrating the Greek Life community and the beginning of so many sweet friendships. It's truly a launchpad for young ladies to grow and develop their own legacies while being surrounded by the most incredible support system. That is something worth celebrating far beyond Bid Day!”
